North Country Cheviot Sheep Society

Monmouthshire In-Lamb Sale 2026

Show & Sale of North Country Cheviot Inlamb Ewes & Ewe Hoggs
Saturday 24th January 2026
Judge - Mr Luke Holmes, Craigiebank

Travelling from Morayshire to take charge of the judging, Mr Luke Holmes, Craigiebank was met with an outstanding selection of sheep forward to show. Finding his Park Champion in a Shearling Gimmer from Keith Stones, Nun Cote Nook flock who had also traveled the distance from North Yorkshire to attend. In reserve posision was an Aged Ewe from regular consignor and local vendor, Ben Baker, BB.
The Hill section top honours also went to a Shearling Gimmer, this one from Cobie King's Rowleys flock, with the same flock receiving the Reserve champion spot too with an Aged Ewe.

A super entry of 177 head was forward for the 2026 sale, with a strong trade evident throughout the day.

The sale opened with the Hill type, producing some very pleasing returns. Mr C King, Rowleys sold his Champion yearling ewe (scanned twins) to 400gns, with another reaching the same figure and a further selling at 300gns. A T & P R Jones, Clytha sold aged ewes scanned at 150% to 320gns and 280gns. There was, however, good opportunity to purchase bunches of strong Hill-type sheep at what appeared very fair value.

Park ewes met strong competition all day, particularly for the best types, with demand outstripping supply.

The top price of the day went to the Sale Champion, a yearling ewe from Mr K O Stones, Nun Cote Nook, which sold for 950gns to Tomos Williams, Muriau. A great bunch of yearlings from first-time vendor Mr Jonny Orrells, Severnside generated plenty of interest, topping at 720gns. Mr Ben Baker, BB sold ewes to 700gns and 650gns, while A Sandle, Spring Bank also reached 700gns and 650gns. The majority of ewes traded between 350–550gns, with very little falling below 300gns.

There was plenty of demand for the smartest ewe hoggs. The 1st prize winner from Mr K O Stones sold for 850gns to the judge, Mr Luke Holmes, with A Sandle also achieving 850gns. Smarter hoggs generally made 300–500gns, while more commercial types sold from 160–250gns.
