Annual Show & Sale of North Country Cheviot Females and Tups – Monmouthshire

The Annual Show and Sale of North Country Cheviot females and tups was held at Monmouthshire Livestock Market on Friday 29th August 2025.

Judging the Park type section was Mr James Bruce, Boxhill, Scarborough, while the Hill type entries were placed by Mr Tom Iredale, Greenbank, Cumbria.

Taking the Park Champion title was a stylish three-crop ewe from Ben Baker’s BB flock. No stranger to success, she also stood Champion at this year’s Royal Welsh Show, having been purchased in lamb from Lockerbie in 2023 from the noted Nun Cote Nook flock. She went on to achieve the day’s top price of £1575.

Reserve Park Champion went to a shearling gimmer sired by Synton Dai from Gwynne Davies’ Brefi flock, which later sold for £651.

In the Hill section, the Champion was awarded to a two-crop ewe by Badanloch Battleship from Melfyn Williams’ Anglesey-based Pengroes flock,who went on to realise £304 which was the top price for a hill female on the day. While the Reserve Hill Champion was a shearling gimmer from Ben Baker’s BB flock, sired by Clytha Dougies Boy and realising £283.

Amongst the younger classes, the first-prize Park ewe lamb came from Wyn Harries’ Hope flock, sired by Sebay Cobra and selling for £556, while the first-prize Hill ewe lamb was shown by Phil and Amy Jones’ Clytha flock, which went on to make £115.

A limited number of tups met a strong trade, particularly in the Park section which topped at £1260 for a shearling from Rhys Davies’ Maerdy flock. This entry, Maerdy Fandango, was sired by Newbiggin Bounty. The Hill section saw its top price of £630 for a three-shear from Gareth Price’s Cymraeg flock, D 03172, sired by Newbank Vintage.

Overall, the sale was met with a lively ringside and strong demand, with quality females and tups well sought after, ensuring a successful day for both vendors and buyers.
