North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
The annual two-day sale of North Country Cheviot Hill type sheep took place at Lockerbie on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th September, drawing strong support from both vendors and buyers.
The females took centre stage on the opening day, with a slightly reduced entry compared to previous years but a buoyant trade throughout. Registered females peaked at £345 twice – firstly for a pen of 20 draft ewes from W.D. Allen, Stouphill, and matched again for a pen of 39 gimmers from Messrs Tweedie, Buchtrig.
The Allen family also topped the ewe lamb section, achieving £180 for a pen of 30.
Demand for Black coloured North Country Cheviots met the highest price of the day, although not registerable with the Society, black sheep are always well sought after and a pair of gimmers from Messrs Watson, Slate House realised £400.
Wednesday saw the tups forward, with a large entry of over 400 attracting a packed and competitive ringside.
The joint top price of £18,000 was achieved twice. First, Dalrachie Eye Candy from Alan & Sarah Jane Forbes, Banffshire, a son of Dalrachie Campbell backed by homebred genetics, joined the Wedderlie Flock of J. & J. Campbell, Berwickshire. Matching this figure was Hetha Express from Bill & Fanny Elliot’s Hetha Flock, sired by Clerkhill Xpress, who was eventually knocked down to Hugh & Sandy Wilson, Newbank, Moffat.
The Dalrachie pen was a highlight of the day. Their first in, Dalrachie El Diablo, bred the same way as Eye Candy, sold for £8,000 to Messrs McIntosh, Borthwickwater Flock, Hawick. In total, the Forbes family’s five tups averaged an outstanding £6,580.
The Attonburn consignment from Bob & Becca Rennie also drew the buyers’ eye. Attonburn Eminem, a son of Badanloch William Wallace, sold to J. Hepburn & Son, North House, Hawick, while Attonburn Eric, bred the same way, realised £8,000 when purchased by Eskdalemuir Forestry Ltd, Clerkhill. Another, Attonburn Erotic, sired by Badanloch Wild Fire, went to K. Sanderson, Kelso for £7,000. Their 11 averaged £3,809.
At £13,000, Auldallan E 11614, the first in from R. Adams & Son, Auldallan, a son of Badanloch Absolut, was secured by W.D. Allen, Stouphill, Northumberland. Their run of 11 averaged £3,572.
Completing the five-figure prices was Alticane Everest from David & Ian Walker, a son of Attonburn All Night Baby, who sold to J.M. Elliot, Woodside for £10,000.
Across both days, demand for quality stock was evident, with buyers prepared to compete strongly for the best bloodlines. While overall numbers were slightly down on last year, the sale returned excellent results, with a 92% clearance reflecting strong confidence in the North Country Cheviot Hill breed.
Sale averages were:
2019 Ewes – £182.92
958 Gimmers – £234.78
347 Ewe Lambs – £149.47
385 Tups – £1,621.82
These figures underline the continuing strength and appeal of the breed, with quality well rewarded and buyers remaining selective but willing to pay for top bloodlines.
