NSA Builth Wells Sale Report

The 40th NSA ram sale at Builth Wells was a royal occasion marked by the attendance of The Princess Royal who visited, amongst others, the North Country Cheviots in Ring 20. HRH chatted with David Pittendreigh whose Coed-y-Foel flock is the longest established in Wales and with Gwynne Davies whose Brefi tup had earlier been picked as the best Welsh entry.

Mr Graham Dun from Gilston judged a strong group in the pre-sale show, pulling out a smart tup from Keith Stones that went on to sell for £500. Another from Nun Cote Nook also reached £500 going to Josh Stevens’ Leason flock at Swansea. A run of 8 from Messrs Cockburn, Kingside, Biggar sold to £650. Selling to £600 Daisy Williams from Hereford brought a nice pen of tups which met a brisk trade. A Philiphaugh Scrumdown yearling from Ched Barratt’s WJ flock went to Mssrs Meakins and Sloyan at Carmarthen, again for £500. Menna Davies from Ellesmere got to £500 and £550 with two yearlings from her Mennick flock and Sam Pedrick’s Brimley flock who’d travelled up from Devon, also got past the £500 mark on their first visit to Builth.

Overall, the trade reflected the generally difficult commercial background with prices well back on the year and with plenty to choose from buyers were well placed to pick up some bargains. Two gimmers from WJ brought the sale to a close at £350 and £330 respectively.
