The Overall Butchers Lambs Championship was won by C. R. Graham & Sons, Carruthers, Lockerbie with a pair of North Country Cheviot Lambs.
The judge, Haig Murray, Procurement Manager for Dunbia, made telling comments –
“I’d just like to say a sincere and wholehearted thanks to everyone at Borderway Carlisle for inviting me to judge at the 2016 Agri-Expo which is now firmly cemented as a Premier Showcase Event for top quality Livestock .
In the sheep section it was sadly impossible to please everyone , however in my judging I took the opportunity to demonstrate the exact requirements for a modern day processor to supply the UK and Worldwide market sector . Which is … a well fleshed carcass , with a good loin , and minimal fat cover . The champions in each section today were without exception perfect examples of their respective breeds and a credit to their exhibitors .
In our daily work as processors we have to listen to our customers requirements, and ensure we provide them with exactly what they ask for, day in day out every time without fail . This in turn will go a long way to sustain a long term sheep industry which produces some of the best lamb in the world and keep the consumer coming back for more .”
……. and of all the breeds the North Country Cheviot was judged the best by this independent expert!
It was also a successful day for young Jack Graham in the Sheep Handling Competition.
